Rai, ranked outside the world's top 40 with no previous major victories, surged from three shots behind at the turn of the final round by making an eagle on the par-5 ninth and one-putting seven consecutive greens before sealing the win with a 70-foot birdie on the 17th, closing with a 5-under 65.
McIlroy was among the contenders entering Sunday but was undone by untimely mistakes on the closing holes. Scheffler, the world's top-ranked player, and Spieth could not produce the rounds needed to mount a serious challenge. Rai's three-shot victory over Jon Rahm emerged from a record 22 players who had been within four shots of the lead entering the final round — one of the more unlikely major championships finishes in recent years.
